Dubliners Essay

At the turn of the twentieth century an eighteen-year old undergrad at University College Dublin wrote a highly complimentary and admiring look backward article of the play When We Dead Awaken by Norwegian master-playwright Henrik Ibsen. The young scholar had the satisfaction of seeing his review publish in the widely-read English Fortnightly Review. What had impressed the youthful throng Joyce was Ibsens naturalist brand of realism. He allows the reader to come to their own conclusion in this respect. Joyce is merely presenting the disembodied spirit of these people, without pre-judgement, with full use of lofty impersonal power.
