At the turn of the twentieth century an eighteen-year old undergrad at University College Dublin wrote a highly complimentary and admiring look backward article of the play When We Dead Awaken by Norwegian master-playwright Henrik Ibsen. The young scholar had the satisfaction of seeing his review publish in the widely-read English Fortnightly Review. What had impressed the youthful throng Joyce was Ibsens naturalist brand of realism. Ibsen was able to kindle an stalwart truth from average lives that appealed to Joyce more than most of Western books at that time. Joyce would use Ibsens vision as a well from which he drew creative inspiration throughout his literary career. Joyces admiration for Ibsen was confirmed in his 1901 garner to the playwright, in which he states: I have shown what, it seems to me, your highest excellence your fantastic nonpersonal power. Joyce subsequently tried to infuse this lofty impersonal power in his collection of fifteen short stories entitle Dubliners. The story of Eveline opens with a young woman gazing out of a window and onto the street whilst fondly recalling memories of childhood. We discover immediately that her demeanor now if very different, and despite her having just entered adulthood she is tired, until now weary.

Joyce makes good use of tone in these simple passages to puzzle this weariness. Evelines thoughts move to her present situation as the reviewer becomes aware of her abusive father. Joyce introduced him to us in the lines: her father was non so badthen (29), allowing the endorser to come to the deduction that the father casts a dark figure in the household. rarely in Dubliners does Joyce details the personality of the central characters. He allows the reader to come to their own conclusion in this respect. Joyce is merely presenting the disembodied spirit of these people, without pre-judgement, with full use of lofty impersonal power.
