In the early days of the United States Constitution, all semipolitical leaders had warned against the forming of political parties. They believed that political parties would separate the people and inactivate the political relation. Although Thomas Jefferson and horse parsley Hamilton believed this as well, their differing beliefs quickly led to the forming of 2 separate political parties. Thomas Jefferson formed the Democratic-Republican Party, while horse parsley Hamilton formed the Federalist Party. These two parties remained active until around 1820, when they dissolved. Both parties beliefs were greatly different from each other. The Federalist Party, led by Alexander Hamilton, was the real basis for the United States Republican Party today. Hamilton and his followers called for much power in the government. They believed that a strong central government would assure the union of the country and would better maintain national security. The Federalists were also fire in keeping good relationships with the British. Alexander Hamilton devised Jays Treaty, which called for smooth, peaceful commerce and navigations between the United States and commodious Britain. It also averted war between the two countries until the War of 1812.

The Democratic-Republicans were potently against this treaty, and were also against the forming of a national deposit, which the Federalists were hoping to establish. The Democratic-Republicans believed that a national bank was unconstitutional. Jefferson argued that a national bank seized power and interests from merchants, farmers, and laborers, and that it violated states rights. The Democratic-Republicans were interested in the power of states individually, not in the governments power over the country as a whole. They rigorously interpreted the Constitution and believed that many of the Federalists ideas were unconstitutional.
