In the short story, Blue, Alan Spence uses a number of effective techniques to create mood and atmosphere to concentrate his themes, such as the universal theme of the story: sexual climax to terms with the wipeout of a loved one. One of the techniques he uses which is, in my view vital to the storys success, is symbolism. The author employs this technique by referring to the distort drear, which is essentially a symbol of sadness, and also by referring to the breeze and the clouds, which are utilise to symbolise the endurance of nature.

Throughout the story, Spence uses symbolisation to support his themes of death being a natural part of the invigoration cycle, rue and coping with the death of a loved one and a few more. From the very beginning of the story we get eye blink associations to the themes of the story from the title, Blue, which has connotations of sorrow. This immediately indicates what the rest of the story is to be about.

To begin the story, the narrator, Spence, is standing looking up at the slash and is lost in the drift of the clouds, moving, following their own torpid dance, orde rubor, haphazard, without end. Here, Spence is describing the clouds as being without end which implies that nature is unfailing and endless.



This endurance of nature symbolises the continuity of life: this idea of lifes cycle is carried on later on in the story.

Spence then begins to associate blue to beings the things he likes: his favourite colour, the colour of his favourite football team, Rangers, the pale grey-blue of the sky, the blue flame wavering in the fire when the coals were a red glow, the blue eyes of his childhood sweetheart, Maureen, and also to Mary, the baffle of God who always wore blue. The simplicity and naivety of this burn conversation shows us that the narrator is telling the story with the eyes of a child and it also establishes the boys youth and innocence.
